Friendly Reminders for Black Friday Shopping

I love Christmas shopping and I love a good deal, but you will never find me out shopping on Black Friday. (Unless they are giving away French Bulldog puppies somewhere, in which case, totally count me in.)  Why? I don’t like crowds or waiting in line, and I would get totally overwhelmed by the chaos of it all. The thought of the parking situation alone is enough to keep me snuggled up at home all day.

It’s not my thing, but I know a lot of people find it fun and I can understand why. If you are unbothered by the crowds, it can be a sort of adventure. A holiday tradition or activity to kick off the season. Christmas music, great deals, hustle and bustle... It’s all about perspective and attitude.

If you are shopping on Black Friday- or really any time this holiday season- I put together a list of friendly reminders to help you make the most of your shopping experience.

Where You Shop

As consumers, the most power that all of us possess is found in our wallets. Where we choose to shop and what we choose to buy dictates the market. If you want to support your community, shop at small, local businesses. If you want to see more women-owned businesses, buy from them this holiday season. Seek out companies that use ethical business practices and give back to society. While it might be a bit more expensive than the big box stores, the items are usually more unique and of a higher quality.

What You Buy

One of the most important tips that I give my clients is to focus on quality over quantity. It feels like society (and clever marketing) is always pushing us to consume more. But in the end, it is usually a big waste of money, not to mention terrible for the planet. That fast fashion sweater is stretched out and pilly after one wash, the cheap toy will give the kids a thrill for 15 minutes and then end up in the bin… it’s just not worth it. Focus on high quality, useful items that will bring lasting joy.

Discounts and Sales

I cannot stress this enough: You do not need to buy it just because it is on sale. I know it can be tempting when you see a really good deal, and I have to give myself this reminder sometimes. Discounts and sales are great for things that you need or were planning to buy anyway, but buying things that you don’t need just because they are on sale is a great way to end up on an episode of Hoarders. (Joking! Kind of.) And, likely, it will go on sale again. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into purchases.

Keeping Perspective

If you find yourself in a tug-of-war over the last LOL Doll, it’s time to reassess. Remember that the holidays are truly about togetherness and joy. Be kind to other patrons, to holiday workers, and even that jerk that stole your parking spot. You never know what other people might be going through. Count your blessings and give back where you can. Volunteer, donate a coat, or support a family in need. It will bring you so much more happiness than that big screen tv ever could.

Have Fun!

Finally, have fun! Try to look at holiday shopping as an opportunity to show your loved ones that you care through meaningful gifting. And if you need help? Reach out! I am here for you.

Happy Shopping!
